I am a self trained seamstress and began sewing as a young girl after being introduced to the craft by my mother. The evolution of my unique handbags began with my love of collecting antique ephemera and experimentation with collage techniques. My early handbags were created as gifts for family and friends until interest and popularity convinced me that what I was creating was quite special and could be turned into a successful business. Coincidentally, this conclusion was reached at the same time as the life changing events of hurricane Katrina transpired. I had been a native of New Orleans for 29 years, living in an 1834 row house on the Mississippi river with my husband Neil ( a photographer and film maker) and our two children Maya and Calder. Most of my years in New Orleans were spent working with young children in a small private Montessori school.
After Katrina, my family and I relocated to the South coast of Massachusetts and as I recreated myself and my life, Blue Maya Designs was born.
I now work out of a beautiful old New Bedford mill building overlooking the Achushnet River and sell my work at shows around the country, from my studio, and on my website. You can contact me directly to discuss custom orders, or if you have questions at 508-758-8393 or 504-231-4020.
